Wagg Dog Food products

Wagg Foods Ltd is a popular pet food company operating in the UK. The company serves up affordable meals for a variety of animals, but we are going to limit our scope to our canine companions for this Wagg dog food review.

Wagg Foods has been around since the early 90s and has seen a few ups and downs over the years. Currently, Wagg dog food enjoys a solid reputation and the company’s products can be found in nearly every major retailer in the UK.

In comparison to some of the other dog foods that we have reviewed here, Wagg somewhat lags behind in the “health food” front, but it is still a good quality dog food selling for a great price.

The Wagg Range of Dog Foods

As would be expected from a dog food company that has been around as long as Wagg has, there is a decent selection of foods that make up the Wagg range.

You can choose from Wagg Worker, Wagg Adult, Wagg Wheat Free, Wagg Puppy, and Wagg Training Treats.

Each of the categories comes with a few different recipes and variations, so you should be able to find a good fit for your dog if you are interested in exploring the Wagg brand.

Wagg Worker: Wagg Worker is broken into two separate groups. There is the Worker line and the Kennel line – each containing the same selection of two recipes.

If you are looking for a dog food that is made for active dogs, any of these options would be fine. Simply choose between Chicken and Veg and Beef and Veg and you’ll be off to the races.

Wagg Adult: Wagg Adult is a no-nonsense adult dog food that comes in the same two flavors seen in the Wagg Worker line.

If you are looking for an inexpensive food option for your adult dog of any size or breed, select either the chicken or beef.

The main difference, as far as we can tell, between Wagg Adult and Wagg Worker is that there are fewer carbohydrates in the Adult line.

Wagg for special diets: There are a few different choices for dogs with special diets which we were happy to see.

There is a Chicken and Rice recipe that is easier on the digestive system. Chicken and Rice is reserved for senior dogs as well as the wheat-free option for dogs with an intolerance to wheat.

The Special Diets section is also where you find the menu (Chicken and Beef again) for small breeds.

Wagg Puppy: There is one recipe available for puppies at Wagg and it is based on chicken.

Unlike chicken meals from the lines, however, the puppy food has a healthy dose of yucca and additives that up the content of nutrients known to support growth and development.

Wagg Treats: By far the most variety that you will see anywhere in the Wagg range is in the treats section.

You’ll find options like Cookie Bites, Dental Bites, Meaty Bites, Crunchy Biscuits, Mini Training Bones, and many more.

Some of the treats are meant for training as indicated by the name, and others are just tasty treats.

Health benefits of Wagg

Wagg dog food is a complete food that provides dogs of all sizes and activity levels with all the nutrition they need.

The recipes for all the various lines within the Wagg range contain supplements and ingredients that support optimal health and promote a well-balanced lifestyle for the dogs who enjoy the food.

Many pet owners often take note of the same few health benefits that Wagg is known to provide. All of the recipes contain probiotics to aid in digestive health, yucca to reduce odor from stools, citrus extract for a healthy immune system, and much more.

Furthermore, Wagg dog food recipes are made without the use of sugar, and as there are also some grain-free options available as well, dogs with sensitive stomachs and allergies are considered among the rest.

One area that we wish had a bit more clarity is in the ingredients used in the dog food.

There are items listed that seem a bit subjective, like Animal Derivatives and Derivatives of Vegetable Origin. It would feel a lot better if we knew what exactly those phrases entailed.

Is it Good Value?

Wagg dry dog food is a great value. It is a food that dogs love and it comes in bags as large a 12kg.

For the money, you would be hard pressed to find a better option. For anyone looking to combine a good dry dog food with a health-conscious wet option, Wagg would certainly be a good candidate for that.

Drawbacks of Wagg

When it comes to drawbacks, there are a few more with Wagg than with some of the other dog food brands we’ve reviewed.

Wagg complete dog food should not be confused with health food. It is a commercial dog food with a simplistic approach.

For many, that simplicity is a boon but for others the lack of recipes might pose a bit of a problem.

That said, Wagg does deliver above its price point making it a great option for anyone not looking to spend a lot of money on feeding their pets.

The only other drawback concerns the Wagg website as there isn’t a great deal of information about the company or its vision, and the level of information on what goes into the food is also lacking.

Is Wagg a good dog food? In short, yes. The ratio to quality to cost is very attractive and dogs seem to really love the taste of the options that are available.

While we do wish that there were more recipes to choose from, the fact that dogs seem happy with what’s already there is certainly a plus.

If you are looking for a good quality commercial dog food that supplies your canine companion with all the nutrition it needs to thrive, Wagg is a great choice.

If you are looking for something a little more Earth-centric, give dogs foods like HiLife dog food, Vitalin dog food, and Gentle dog food.
